Did Blood-Clot Filter Used on Thousands of Americans Have Fatal Flaw?

NBC Nightly News (9/2, story 6, 4:40, Holt, 7.86M) reported on a year-long NBC investigation into the Recovery blood clot filter, made by CR Bard, which has been “associated with at least 27 fatalities and about 300 reported problems.”

The NBC News (9/3, Sandler, 3.73M) website reports that according to confidential documents obtained by NBC News, a report by an outside physician found that “the Recovery filter had higher rates of relative risk for death, filter fracture, and movement than all its competitors” and concluded that “further investigation...is urgently warranted.” Despite the report, Bard did not recall the device. NBC’s investigation also turned up potential irregularities in the regulatory approval process by Bard, which will be reported on in the second part of this two-part series.
