Lawsuits Allege Link Between Roundup and Cancer

Hundreds of plaintiffs have filed Roundup lawsuits against Monsanto alleging that the company’s popular herbicide causes non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a rare form of cancer.

There are currently dozens of product liability lawsuits pending against Monsanto throughout the federal court system, each involving claims that Monsanto knew or should have known about the link between Roundup and non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, yet failed to give adequate warnings and instructions about safety measures that should be taken to reduce exposure to glyphosate, the main ingredient in Roundup.

Roundup Maker Says Herbicide is Safe

Roundup is the most used herbicide in the world, and Monsanto continues to insist that the herbicide is safe and does not cause cancer. The company has spent the last 20 years genetically re-engineering corn, soybeans, and cotton to make it easier to spray the crops with the weed killer, and according to a March 2017 New York Times report, approximately 220 million pounds of glyphosate were used in 2015 in the U.S. alone.

Although many other companies also sell products containing glyphosate, Monsanto remains the one targeted in the lawsuits, perhaps because they invented the chemical, held the patent for many years, are the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) registrant for glyphosate, and continue to dominate the market, according to a CNN report.

IARC: Roundup “Probably Carcinogenic to Humans”

Although regulatory authorities in the U.S., Europe, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, and Australia have stated publicly that glyphosate does not cause cancer, the National Pesticide Information Center has acknowledged that conflicting reports about a potential link between glyphosate and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma do exist.

In 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) reported that glyphosate is “probably carcinogenic to humans.” But a report produced by the EPA’s Cancer Assessment Review Committee concluded that glyphosate is “not likely to be carcinogenic to humans.”
