Proposed Ohio Driver's License Legislation

April 22, 2013

Ohio State Representative Matt Lynch, R-Bainbridge, has introduced a bill that would interfere with a federal policy that allows the undocumented to obtain an Ohio driver’s license.  This legislation is wrong headed.

No one can obtain auto liability insurance in Ohio without a valid Ohio driver’s license and Ohio requires every driver to have liability insurance.  That policy makes sense.  If you negligently damage another person or vehicle you should have insurance to compensate for the harm caused.

Representative Lynch should be concerned with protecting Ohioans from uncompensated injury.  In addition, proper identification is a great assistance to law enforcement.  What does Representative Lynch’s bill do to help Ohioans? Absolutely nothing.  It will only do harm.  Please let him know how you feel.
