PRESS RELEASE
Murray & Murray and Sandusky Library Collaborate to Provide Sandusky with Little Free Libraries
(SANDUSKY, Ohio) - The Murray & Murray Co., L.P.A., law firm in downtown Sandusky, Ohio, and the Sandusky library have joined forces to bring the Little Free Library to Sandusky, which provides community members access to small collections of used books, free to the public for borrowing.
The first Little Free Library unit will be located in Sandusky’s Washington Park. The Little Free Library concept began in Wisconsin in 2009 and has now spread throughout the world. The first Sandusky library unit will serve as an initial test to gauge community interest in using the Little Free Libraries.
Murray & Murray purchased the first book hub from the Little Free Library organization and will supply building materials for the additional units, which will then be built by students from a Sandusky High School carpentry class.
The Sandusky Public Library has agreed to supply used books donated by supporters and to help recruit volunteers to monitor the libraries and restock them with donated books. The small libraries will work on the honor system, allowing users to return and borrow books at their convenience. Sandusky Library Director, Julie Brooks, estimates that about 100 books a month will be required to keep the libraries stocked with books.
The library hopes the community will help by donating used books, fiction and nonfiction, and children’s books, but has asked that magazines not be donated.
Murray & Murray and the Sandusky Library are both excited about the project’s potential to enrich and educate community members. “Reading is a key part of enjoyment of life and enjoyment of the arts,” said Murray & Murray partner, John T. Murray, who led the way on the project. The project represents a mission of particular importance in Murray’s household, as his wife Susan is a reading teacher.
“Of course, it promotes reading and literacy,” said Director Brooks in a recent Sandusky Register interview, “[a]ny way that can happen is a good thing.”
The grand opening for the first Little Free Library will be celebrated at a reception at the Sandusky Public Library at 4 p.m. Wednesday, February 12, 2014. Book donations or commitments to volunteer can be made to the Sandusky Public Library at the reception or at any time thereafter.
