Ohio proposes permanent Daylight Saving, but what would that mean for Kentucky, Indiana?

April 3, 2019

The Ohio Sunshine Protection Act is gaining support as other states are pushing for yearlong standard time. The bill would also prevent public agencies and local governments from opting out of the change.

Ohio is one of 48 states that recognize Daylight Saving Time; Hawaii and Arizona don’t. Daylight Saving Time begins March 10 and ends Nov. 3. If Ohio makes the change, for four months every year, Ohio would be an hour ahead of Kentucky and Indiana.

"I think it would be a lot of confusion, a lot of problems,” said Kelly Snow.

State senators Kristina Roegner and Bob Peterson are the sponsors. Roegner recently posted a poll on social media about getting rid of time changes, and the response was overwhelming in favor of it. Event the president is on board, supporting the idea in a tweet in March.

Some bus rides in downtown Cincinnati and northern Kentucky aren’t that excited about the idea.

"There's a lot of people that live in Cincinnati that work in Kentucky, so this could definitely set a big problem,” said Derrick Wise.

The time difference could be a big problem for Don Reece, who lives in Ohio but takes the bus to work in Kentucky.

"I would get confused which one. I am here early? Am I here on time?” said Reece.

But perhaps the biggest concern if Ohio stays on Daylight Saving Time is air travel. CVG says about 70 percent of passengers come from Ohio.

Mike Ward is a frequent flier for his job. He’s not personally concerned if the times are different in Ohio and Kentucky. He does, however, bring up a good point.

"I guess from an airline standpoint, what time do they post in? When will the departure be? Ohio time or Kentucky time? We will see,” said Ward.

Florida and California recently passed similar laws and are waiting on Congressional approval. Ohio’s bill will get its first reading on Wednesday.
